Anna and I attended an event on Saturday night that was being held to benefit the ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter. The event was run by a fellow, probably in his mid 20’s, who readily admitted that he had no connection to ALS and was doing this event hoping that he could meet Curt Schilling. The event was attended by his buddies. There was no family or people from different age groups present. It was like a college party. And like a college party, when the “hat gets passed,” people generally don’t give much.
Despite the relatively low totals generated by the event, I still feel like it was a success. The fact is that 60-75 young people donated something for the ALS Association. As these kids grow and develop philanthropically, they will have already been introduced to the ALS Association by an industrious young fellow who really just wanted to meet Curt Schilling.
As our company develops we need to find a way of evaluating the true long-term value of an event like this.
