As spring awakens the trees around my home abound with various species of birds. Each morning and evening my kids point and ask with excitement what bird is at the feeder, in the yard or on a branch. On lucky days I know the species, but most days I am not lucky. To improve my luck I thought my kids and I could participate in an Audubon Chapter Bird-a-thon. We would have some family fun and learn a few things that would last us a lifetime. Unfortunately, my local chapter does not conduct a Bird-A-Thon. Fortunately most people across the country do have access to a Bird-a-thon nearby.
In a Bird-a-thon teams of people, of all ages, set out to identify as many species of bird as they can over a designated time frame. At the same time, the teams and their members conduct fundraising to collect pledges and donations for their efforts. The money goes to the local Audubon Society Chapter. Audubon Society Chapters across the United States rely on their annual Bird-a-thons for fundraising and community building.
Bird-a-thon fundraising is as unique as the bird species viewed and no two bird-a-thons are alike. Some require multiple beneficiaries, others multiple group registrations, or unique registration rules and prizes. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What is consistent is all of them are a fun and effective way to fund raise across all ages and communities.
