What does your cover image say?

“I want to participate in this event! I want to raise money for this cause! I want to make a donation!”

If the home page cover image on your fundraising event website doesn’t inspire those reactions right away, you might want to think about changing it. This is the very first thing they see when they come to your site, and the impression is immediate.  It’s the most important thing on your home page. To that end, here is the advice we give our clients  when choosing their peer-to-peer fundraising site cover image:

 Do: Choose one of two sorts of images:

  • Cause-focused: This is the picture that relates to who and what your raising money for. It should be an emotional image that tells the visitor how important the work you’re doing is.
    Example:
  • Event-focused: This image captures the event itself and shows it at its most inspiring and fun. This one should be uplifting and make it obvious to anyone who sees it how enjoyable it is.
    Example:

Don’t: Clutter your image with logistical information and logos

We see it often: a header image cluttered with event date, address, and other practical but uninspiring information. While logistics are important  and should be made easily available on the site, they should not occupy space in your cover image. At most a simple event date can be included, but try to keep it minimal.

Too much practical information will distract the goal of inspiring users to sign up and/or donate, and no one has ever been galvanized to action by dates and addresses. Let your message draw your audience in, and they will be sure to scroll down to check out the logistical details once they’re on board.

Do: Use high quality images.

The obvious choice for great cover photos is a selection from last year’s event. This is a great way to go if you have quality images that tell a good story. On the other hand, when the photos you have are dreary looking snapshots that don’t capture what was fun or inspiring about your event, it will do the opposite of what a cover should do.

We recommend having a good photographer at your event to ensure that your images are spot on. If budget is a concern, there are plenty of talented amateur photography enthusiasts out there who might do the work pro-bono or at a reduced rate.

Don’t: forget to keep the right dimensions in mind.

You’ll want a wide image that’s not too tall, so that it can span the width of the page without requiring the user to scroll down to see the whole thing.

When in doubt, go with your gut!

As important as it is, this doesn’t have to be a difficult or stressful. You’ll know your image when you see it. If it makes you smile or think about the great work your organization is doing, chances are it’s a good one.
